I dont get 4chan am i missing something?

all my friends say how funny it is and quote it irl but all i ever see are pictures of cats (macros) and people saying fail...is there something else on the site im missing i dont want them to think i just dont get it cuz i do its like ebaumsworld or woot but my friends get mad if i dont laugh at things they think are funny so is there more jokes on the site i might like? some sites i find funny are penny arcade and the onion.
